Sarah Smout is a cellist, singer, and poet whose work is rooted in a deep love of the natural world. Blending live-looped cello soundscapes, ethereal vocals, and evocative poetry, she creates immersive performances that speak to our connection with nature in a time of climate crisis.

Her music has taken her from Arctic ice to remote islands, where she has gathered field recordings, written in solitude, and performed in wild landscapes. In spring 2025, Sarah joined The Arctic Circle Residency, sailing around Svalbard with a cohort of artists. There, she recorded underwater sounds with a hydrophone and played her carbon fibre cello among melting glaciers — experiences that will shape her debut album (due 2026), a cross-disciplinary project bridging art and science.

Sarah's work has featured on BBC Radio 2, Introducing, and Look North. She’s collaborated with Greenpeace, COP26, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and Nature North, and received an Honorary Research Fellowship from the University of Cumbria. A sought-after session cellist for over a decade, she has played with artists such as Michael Chapman, Bridget St. John, The Magpies and The Mediaeval Baebes.
As a solo artist, Sarah has performed at international festivals and theatres, with recent highlights including Hay Festival (sold out debut), Folk East, Shambala, Deershed Festival, Kendal Mountain Festival, and the Royal Geographical Society tour of her show Waterbaby. Her Iceland-inspired work Eyjar and her live film Rooted blend music, poetry, and environmental storytelling, continuing her mission to amplify the voices of people, places, and species often unheard.
From mossy peat bogs to icy fjords, Sarah Smout’s art invites audiences to listen more deeply — to land, to water, and to the fragile beauty of our shared home.
